Rated 3 out of 5 by Ironic1 from Unlike picture, crown has no structure Previously I rated this hat as five stars because it was attractive, looked good with a wide range of clothing, was well made, had a structured crown, and was comfortable year round in northern Idaho. It was a very good bargain on a quality product. Now the crown has no structure and just flops on your head. My most recent purchase, other than the crown that flops, appears to have the same features as before. However, for me the floppy crown is completely unacceptable. The picture that accompanies the hat is the old one with a structured crown. Believe me, it looks quite a bit different.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Baldman from Nice hat, but why did you put a logo on it? I like these hats in winter because they are warm, look nice, and aren't cluttered up with corporate or sports logos. Unfortunately, I bought the plaid hat this year, and though the picture doesn't show it, it has a 2" black LL Bean logo embroidered on the lower part of the front left above the brim. Yuck. It's subtle, but why not show that in the photo? I own the black and blue versions without the logo, and was expecting the same. I'll wear it, but always with a slight twinge of disappointment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Ironic1 from Great Year Round I agree with the rater who said: 1.Good looking 2. Comfortable3. Quality construction I've been wearing this year round in Northern Idaho for three years. Provides some insulation in Winter, but not especially warm in Summer. Doesn't fade in summer like cotton hats. I can't find another cap of this quality. All I have to do is run a lint roller over it once in awhile to get rid of fine dog hair. At first I thought it would be too warm for summer, but have not found that to be the case at all. I'm about to buy another for backup. Original still looks great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Shermdog from Great Hat This is the 4th of these hats that I have purchased. The wool is good quality, and the brim is durable. The leather strap and clasp to secure the fit are also high quality. Most importantly for wool hats is the lining on the inside of the hat. For gentlemen with a little less insulation on the top a wool hat can be itchy. The lining takes care of that. If you are a ball cap guy, this is your go to winter hat. It stays warm in rain and snow. The blue is dark navy blue like a pea coat and the green is a nice shade like an evergreen or a brown mossy green. Its not a green green but a good earth tone that goes well with lots of colors.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Catechumen from Good Winter Cap I have this hat in Navy, Green, Red, and the Red and Black plaid (and I have a couple of extras stored away). They seem to vary ever so slightly in their fabric content depending on the color, but they are, basically, 53-55% wool and the balance is polyester, viscose, and/or other fibers. I guess if it’s over 50%, Bean feels free to call it a wool cap – I’d prefer a higher wool content, but perhaps the manmade fibers decrease the risk of shrinking over time. In any case, despite the relatively low wool content, I do like these caps. The fabric is soft and they are warm. As some have posted, these are not structured caps and it has no crown stiffener, which I consider to be a HUGE advantage. I hate those caps with the high, reinforced crown to allow plenty of advertising room for trucks, hybrid seeds, or chewing tobacco and I like a cap that I can remove and stick in my back pocket. This is a relatively low profile cap and I think it looks great. I keep one squashed away in the back of my seat in my Jeep, just in case. I haven’t had any problems with discomfort from the metal buckle in the back – and my hair is shorn close to the scalp and neither have I’ve experienced any itchiness. I normally wear a 7 ¾ to 7 5/8 inch hat and sizing has not been an issue with these caps. As for the colors, the red is pretty true to as pictured; it is a fairly bright, scarlet red (I like it quite a bit). The green has an olive hue to it - think Filson wool mackinaw. The blue has a good amount of black in it and can appear either black or blue depending on the lighting. As someone else has noted the red and black version does have an embroidered “LL Bean” in black thread on the front side – it’s relatively discreet, but would be better without it. All of them have a Bean logo on the brass clasp in the back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by PAWads from Great winter hat but could be even better. Wool hat keeps my head warmer and overall style is great! Nice colors and curled leather visor is just right. Higher crown adds to warmth by creating air pocket and reduces "hat hair" effect. Just wish it were fully enclosed (but adjustable) in back instead of a strap. Metal buckle in strap looks "classy" but is a bit uncomfortable when first put in. Velcro would have sufficed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Mervich from Wool Ball Cap - OK, Not Great This is a nice cap, but the low profile is a bit too low. In fairness, I have a large head…24½ inches. This cap can be adjusted to fit, but it looks like it has been stretched over my head…kinda like I borrowed a cap from a 12 year old! Now, I personally don't care for caps with the too tall front space provided for advertising…I call those "bucket hats" (looks like ya have a bucket on your head). This cap is the polar opposite of a "bucket" on my big head…low profile overdone. On the other hand, the L.L.Bean Logo Fishing Cap (Item #:TA254556) is the perfect shape…low profile, but not too low.

Rated 5 out of 5 by bluedun from Good hat for SF South Bay winter It's a perfect baldy's hat for our mild winters, morning and evening usually, all day sometimes. If there's rain, it works alone for light exposure, and, of course it fits well under a hood when the rain's heavy (we wish for those days again). The strap allows for a just right fit, and on my hat its clasp is comfortable. Contrary to the label instructions, I infrequently hand wash this hat in cold water and delicate care, wool wash soap and then re-wax the bill--so far so good. Recommended.
