Product Details

The Maine Hunting Shoe was "L.L." Bean's first product, introduced in 1912. Over the years, we've made lots of improvements, but hunters told us they missed the moccasin-like feel that our original boots had in the woods. So we brought it back.

  • Approx. weight:: 3 lb. 13 oz. per pair.
  • With light or midweight socks: Whole sizes, order one size down. Half sizes, order 1½ size down. Example: 9 or 9½, order a size 8. With heavyweight socks: Whole sizes, order your normal size. Half sizes, order one size down. Example: 9 or 9½, order a size 9.

With a moccasin-like sole that lets you feel the forest floor beneath your feet, a taller 12" height for extra coverage and a waterproof upper, we carefully considered every detail of these Maine-made boots. As one customer told us, "These boots fit like they have over a 100 years of effort put into the design."

  • Premium waterproof leather upper.
  • Steel shank for superior lateral and arch support.
  • New sole provides improved traction and durability.
  • Leather molds to your leg for a custom fit.
  • Moccasin-like, flexible sole allows you to feel the forest floor.
  • Laces not waterproof.
  • Handstitched and checked for quality.
  • Not designed to stay submerged in water.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Excellent boot, odd fit I love the style of this boot. The rubber lower is grippy, flexible, and tough. The leather upper is supple, water-resistant, and solidly stitched. The boot is very sturdy, durable, comfortable, and lightweight for what it is. If you remove the insoles, you can wear Bama socks or similar for when the temp goes below 0ºF. However, the fit is weird. I'm 6'3", 185lbs, size 13 US, and of muscular build. The boots fit like they're designed for some kind of mountain troll with monstrous tree-trunk calves. As I am not a mountain troll, but a mere man, this is somewhat of a problem. The rubber lower fits great. The lower part of the leather upper is a bit too roomy and requires the laces to be cinched down very far. The upper part of the leather upper is too big entirely, and as you can see, I have a solid 1" gap between my calf and the edge of the boot, even with the laces fully tightened. I'm not sure if this is a problem with all these boots, or one specific to the size 13s, or one specific to the pair I received. Whatever the case, these boots are an awesome idea but they need a better fit to be useful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glad I found these! I had seen pictures on TV of boots like these, but could not find them. Looking for a boot I could wear in the woods (and mud). I had found with shorter 8" & 6" boots that my pants legs came back muddy and wet. These boots need the large calf area to get the foot in the boot, with the plus that trouser legs can then be bloused inside. I got a size smaller than I normally wear and can wear extra boot socks or not over dress socks, and the boot stays in place on my feet. . Another plus of these boots is that they have good traction without cleats full of dried mud the day after. Only question is what kind of leather care, if any, is needed beyond rubbing dirt off

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lace up rubber bottom Has too many eyelets. Thought the boots would be easier to lace up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I Love the vintage look and the history of boots. I have thin legs so the lacing brings the Left and right sides tight to each other. I realize you need to accommodate skinny and beefy calfs. Appears true to size. I still like them though. Now we we Just need some snow in Wisconsin 😁

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth the wait I first borrowed a pair of 16” Maine Hunting boots from a friend back in the early 90’s and fell in love with them. They belonged to his father and were passed down to him from his grandfather. They were in perfect shape, standing the test of time. So why all this time before I purchased a pair for my own? That I’m not sure of but I have a pair now that I plan to pass down to my son one day. I’ve owned a similar pair over the years but they did not stand the test of time. The absolute best craftsmanship goes into these boots and is beautiful in its simplicity. Looking forward to many days in the field with this pair of boots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 12 in hunting boots I bought my first pair of the Bean boots 46 years ago and I still have them. They have been resoled and repaired several times. I am in the process of getting a new pair. I have been very pleased with these boots and I would highly recommend them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Boot…been buying for years I owned Bean boots for upland hunting since the 70’s. Probably 4th generation to do so. Just got back from bird hunting in Maine wearing my new pair. Walked an average of 5 miles/day. No sore tired feet . They handle some water. But, if I expect to encounter a lot of rain or creeks I opt for all rubber.
