Does the job and does it well
The stowaway part is within the bag itself. You basically turn it inside out to make it work. It has a lot of pockets and storage for two water bottles on the side.
I used this bag as my personal item for a plane and then stowed it away (folded it within itself) for the duration of my backpacking hike. I would highly recommend this as a personal item carrier for a plane.
I have not used the water bag holder yet.

It has traveled the world with us for >15 years.
This LL bean backpack has been our go-to day pack for >15 years — pre kid, 1 kid, and 2 kids. It weighs nothing when empty. Holds a ridiculous amount of stuff (thing 2 iPads with clunky otterbox cases, 2 kid head phones, water bottles, and hoodies), yet isn’t bulky either empty or full. A couple of pockets/water bottle side pockets without risking ADD members of the family losing stuff in the pockets. Goes in the washing machine. Folds in to it’s own pocket, but unfolded, it ALWAYS fits in middle the clam-shell suitcase.
It was originally gifted to us a corporate swag (thanks Trip Advisor), but it’s literally traveled the world with us!

Great pack, BUT
The chest straps do not hit the female chest in the right place. Super awkward and not flattering.

Nothing special
Bought as an airline bag to fit under the seat. Somewhat disappointed because it’s not nearly as well made as the stowaway day pack I bought several years ago for day hikes. The bottle holders don’t have a cinch strap like the old one and this one won’t fit the larger airport water bottles. And the zippers and fabric don’t seem as durable. I would have gladly paid more for my old stowaway model.

Black L.L.Bean Stowaway Pack
Ordered black L.L.Bean Stowaway Pack. Nice quality made lightweight day pack. Issue for petite female is chest buckle straps don't fall at appropriate location. Adjusted shoulder straps but still unable to completely resolve chest buckle strap issue. Will keep pack since purchased for light weight vacation travel and touring. Pack can accommodate a Camelbak. I use other heavier durable packs for AT hiking.

Not the quality I expected.
I bought for a trip to Africa this last month. The binding tape stitching on the strap has come loose. The bottle mesh carriers are loose and the water bottles fall out. Poor quality. I’m disappointed.

One of the best
Hands down there is no better backpack out there for my daily needs. Walk to gym and gym activities. Has great zippered pockets, it holds so much and fits perfect with 2 straps to hold in place during walk/hike. Only complaint is the water bottle side pouches. The bottles (especially the larger ones) just tend to fall out when the backpack is placed on the ground and sometimes when I pick it up. It is also extremely durable. I have tried so many over the years and this will be my forever purchase. Thanks

Exceeds my expectations
This pack keeps surprising me with it's utilities. It is very light, but has so many places to store things for different things that i need it to do. Two side drink pockets are large and sturdy. Straps can accommodate hanging shoes, inside pockets for keys and smaller valuables. Large interior pocket for jacket, purse, shopping items etc. So useful and light and beautiful

Disappointed senior grocery shopper
I really wanted to like this pack. I am a ninety year old woman, living in a senior residence and still cooking my own meals. I gave up my car in January of this year, planning to shop locally and on foot for groceries, using trekking poles for safety. The stowaway pack seemed like it would fit the bill for carrying my food items. I confess that I did not investigate the pack carefully enough; alas, without front buckling "wrap" straps to hold the pack securely close to the body the pack easily slips off my shoulders, making walking a hazardous situation, since I have to keep stopping to adjust the load.

Good backpack that could have been better
I was looking for a packable backpack that I could use as a smaller day pack so I got the Stowaway. I liked the size and the fabric and fit and color. The only real issue is that it was difficult to pack, I fought with it and with a bad wrist it wasn't fun. The Stowaway is a good deal and seems like it will last a lifetime.

Just what I need
This is the perfect lightweight day pack for my trip to Japan, big enough to use on the plane as carry on, and just right for use during the day for water and jacket. The chest strap is adjustable and holds the shoulder straps in place.

Disappointed!! Returning Stowaway Pack
Mr. Bean..
I originally bought this product perhaps 10 years ago at your Headquarters store in Freeport. The previous product was excellent and held up very well.
This new Stowaway Pack lacks ANY durability features at all! I have been on two hikes and the flexible fabric on the sides of the pack have already developed holes. The fabric you have used to hold a water bottle or etc. lacks any ability to stand up to the simplest of wear and tear. The previous product had a netting fabric that lasted for ten years and showed only moderate wear and tear. Also, the fabric for the pack looks like rip stop nylon but it also has holes that should not be there. Your “rip stop” nylon is a joke. Just look at the bottom of the pack and you will see over a dozen holes.
I have dropped you from my list of quality outdoor equipment providers. If you want to send me your “new” Stowaway Pack for a consumer test before releasing it to the public, just let me know.

Nice little pack... BUT
I bought this pack about two years ago. I have used it a number of times to travel and to hike. The stitching inside the little pocket gave way and it is a bit of trouble to repair it.

I’ve carried these backpacks for two decades
I have carried these backpacks for two decades. They used to have pool cords on the side pockets that are mesh and now they are just stretching when you carry a backpack every day of your life you need to make sure things aren’t gonna fall out and the stretches gonna stretch out long before a pool cord would’ve worn out Other than that. Everything else with This backpack is great

Top loop failed during hiking tour trip
I bought this to prepare for a trip of a lifetime tour in New Zealand. It was used occasionally over the year on practice day hiking trips with minimal weight as I have back issues and cannot carry much. Maybe 2 dozen uses. While on the hiking trip, with it containing a one liter water bottle, a lightweight rain coat, a packed lunch, a sweatshirt and a small first aide kit, the top loop ripped out while pulling it out of the overhead shelf where it was stored. It was a 6 week trip and I returned just as the 1 year warranty for this expired. I expect more from LLBean products regarding them withstanding normal usage for their purpose without ripping out a critical loop feature often used,

Great backpack!
I already had one of these and love it! Great for travel. Have used it while visiting National Parks too. Love the 2 outside water bottle pockets. Is a great size. Has different sections in main compartment. Bought this one for my daughter so she would have her own backpack to use(she was always putting her water bottle in one of my bckpk pockets).

Beautiful colors, poor design.
I loved the color and size of this back pack but it has a few drawbacks when in actual use. The chest straps are useless for women because they cut right across the breasts. The external pocket access is actuated by straps that leave dangling strap left overs. The two inner pockets are difficult to reach and once they are full make items in the bottom of the pack difficult to reach. One has to constantly rearrange the order of packing according to the day’s or hour’s need. The back pack is strong and well constructed but poorly designed. I expected it to be lighter than a standard book bag but it is lined and with all the straps does not meet that need. I did not use the waist straps so they also were dangling modifiers.

Lightweight but a bit flimsy
On the plus side, this pack is extremely lightweight and holds quite a lot. It works well as a “personal item” for air travel for that reason. I like the straps, including a waist strap. On the minus side, one of the inside pockets is virtually unusable the way it is positioned underneath another inside pocket. Even worse, a small outer pocket came apart during the second week of use, and several small items ended up lost in the lining. It took a lot of effort to retrieve the items that fell through the hole in the pocket. Sadly, it will have to go back.

My Go To Daily Pack
I do a lot of hiking and fitness walking, and also travel quite a bit. I always reach first for this pack for daily outings in all seasons. It folds well into an overhead bag for travel and does not take up a lot of space. Plenty of zippered pockets and an outside mesh pocket with an elastic strap to secure a water bottle. Not meant for heavy gear hauling or expeditionary use, but perfect for long walks and hikes of a few hours.

Great lightweight day pack
This is a great lightweight day pack with more capacity. I also owned the ultralight version which I love, but I decided for some activities I needed a slightly larger day pack so that is why I purchased this one. I have not yet used it on a hike, so I am hoping that it holds up with great quality.

Back pack
I love the idea of this backpack. It is really lightweight. I ordered it online, but when it arrived, it was much smaller than I thought. I wish they made it in a bigger size. It would be great for traveling, but I feel like it just needs to be a little bit bigger.
