Could be perfect, but...
There is much to love about this backpack. The simple layout and organization is great, the retro styling is appealing and doesn't look out of place on the trails or on the subway, your stuff is easily accessible, and the bag is really nicely constructed--the zipper is big and tough and so smooth to operate, even with one hand. The orange red color is brilliant--high viz but it doesn't look like hunting surplus.
This could have easily been a five-star item.
But...
The inside is lined with black which makes it very difficult to see stuff in the bag, and the straps are, perhaps, the worst backpack straps I've ever encountered. They are straight and shockingly un-ergonomic, they are absurdly thick and remarkably unyielding, they were impossible to adjust comfortably and they chafed the inside of my upper arms just wearing the pack around the house trying to get it to work.
I really wanted this to work, and and it killed me to send it back. I've tried other LL Bean packs of similar size in the store, and they were all fine to excellent in terms of fit. I don't know why this one was so utterly awful.
LL Bean, please make this with a light-colored interior and thinner, more comfortable, body-friendly straps. It's aesthetically wonderful, and could be a perfect daypack/travel item.

A much appreciated gift
Excellent daypack for hiking in the Presidential Range. This was given as a retirement gift, perfect because it will hold water and trekking poles. The recipient was thrilled.

Very well made Back Pack. Am sure it'll be just what I need, once I use it. I can always count on Bean!! Just wish I could've bought at the 'Mother Ship' in Maine!!
