Rated 1 out of 5 by sh00k from Do not buy - super heavy! I was considering buying this bag until I went to the LL Bean store and tried it on. I thought there was mistakenly something inside of it when I picked it up because it was so heavy. It is literally 2.5-3 pounds if I am not mistaken. Looking through the pack, I realize that 50% of the weight is from the back support piece that is affixed to the bag. This is a huge design oversight and I cannot believe something like this got into production. When loaded up, you will easily have 10 pounds on your back making a hike very uncomfortable. In short: This bag is far too heavy. Look for another solution.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Bombadil from Good Field Bag After many searches for a large enough birding field bag for my purposes I came across this waist pack in your flagship store in Freeport. I was looking for a larger bag than what I was currently using (which was specifically promoted for birding purposes). This waist pack is large enough to accommodate one or two field guides, notebook, snacks, insect repellent and anything else that I may take on a birding walk\trip. I have no trouble locating what I need in the pack when I am in the field. I use the shoulder strap so the issues that other reviewers have written about wearing it around the waist have not affected me. I do agree with the comments about too many straps flying all over the place but you have to take the good with the bad.

Rated 3 out of 5 by cathync from Not pratical I wanted this pack for awhile. It is totally impractical. The pockets for the water bottles will only hold a 16 oz bottle if you're lucky. I purchased it so I could carry two 32 oz. LLBean bottles, but that is not going to happen. I purchased it thinking I would be able to carry snacks in the pocket and a dry pair of socks and maybe a dry shirt. Not going to work. Too small. I would be lucky if I could fit lunch. It is nice looking and well made, but useless if you are taking a day hike. I have an LLBean waist pack that I have had for 20+ years. I use it at least 4 times a week hiking with my dogs and two or three times a month hiking with friends. It is still in great shape. It has one water pocket and I am able to carry a 48 oz. LLBean tall water bottle in it. It has two pockets on each side. I carry lunch and snacks in one pocket and a dry pair of socks, a dry shirt, two bandanas and bug spray in the other pocket. It has two tiny pockets to carry keys, money, bandaids, tissues etc. I throw it in the washing machine and it comes out great. Wish I could buy another one of those.

Rated 5 out of 5 by sherpagrl from Great for City Day Trips, Not Hiking My teenage daughter purchased this for a series of city visits. It was perfect for her needs. She was able to put a small water bottle in the mesh holder along with a can of spray sunscreen. It also fits her wallet, airpods, sunglasses, phone and a small snack. If you need something to hold a large water bottle, Yeti or HydroFlask, it won't work. Ditto if you want something to hold an extra clothing layer. For our needs of day-touring around a city, it was perfect.

Rated 1 out of 5 by AverageJoePhoenix from Do Not Buy First, let me start by saying I am an avid supporter and buyer of LLBean products for over three decades. LLBEAN stands for quality, reliability, performance and durability. I recently purchased the waist pack and I should have heed the advice of the other reviewers to stay away from this product. On the plus side, the waist pack is functional, high quality and an optimal size for a day hike without the bulkiness of a day pack. On the NEGATIVE SIDE (and this is a deal breaker for me...), the pack is poorly designed and not to the contour of the small of your back. In short, the pack is rigid and does not sit comfortably on your back. Because of its rigidity, the pack will PULL AWAY when you load it with personal belongings, water, etc. The end result is the pack is not stable, sways and bounces away from the body. It's like wearing a small billboard (similar to vendors at street fair) on your back. Save your money and time and look elsewhere for a sturdier and more comfortable pack that fits around the small of your back.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Janila from Little Disappointed I was so excited about ordering this pack because it seemed as though it would be just the right size for my purpose for purchasing it. I wasn't disappointed with the size, it is perfect for my needs. It seems very well made and is very attractive. However, I loaded it up with the items that were in my slightly too small waist pack and first discovered that the zipper on the small front pocket is very difficult to open and close. The fabric keeps getting caught in it. Then when I finished loading it, I put it on and tightened the waist straps and found that the tab to keep the excess strap from flapping around is back close to the bag. My strap gets no where near that point so I guess I will need to tack the strap myself. Then as I walked around with the pack on, the top part of the bag wouldn't stay close to my body. It leans away even though there is no weight in it. Last, I think I had read it in another review, but the water bottle pockets are very small. Fortunately, I do use a store purchased 16 ounce water bottle most of the time because none of my refillable bottles will fit in it. I will keep this pack simply because the size is very crucial for the items that I need to carry on the trail with me. Here's hoping that I can figure out a way to get it to fit better after I tack the waist straps myself.

Rated 3 out of 5 by iggys from Close... I wanted to love this item to end my eternal search for a great, versatile travel bag. It is top quality construction, beautiful fabric. The water bottle pockets are small, but perfect for stowing sunglasses, cell phone charger, headset. Front pocket is difficult to open around the curve, but would be good for travel documents. Main compartment is large and undivided - which I prefer over someone else's idea of organization. Nice bottom pocket- again would be great for a passport as it is inaccessible to pickpocketing. But.... this bag tries too hard to be many things. As a shoulder bag, it is too bulky when the big/padded lumbar strap is hidden away. The lumbar strap also adds weight. All of which makes it uncomfortable on the shoulder. As a lumbar pack, it sits away from the body, protruding out too much. The final issue I had is about cosmetics/hassle factor. There are so many straps dangling everywhere when not in use as a fully packed lumbar pack. The tails are so distracting, I didn't want to use it as a shoulder bag. So, it didn't work in either role for me. I wish these bags could be tested in real life situations before releasing them for sale. So close to a great bag.
