Great Backpack - Poor Water Bottle Pocket Design
I bought this backpack for my 10 year old son to take to school. It’s a great size, made of high quality materials and has strong zippers. Unfortunately the water bottle pocket is poorly designed. It’s made of soft mesh elastic that stretches over time and fails to adequately hold my son’s 24oz water bottle in place. After only 4 months of use, I’ve had to replace 2 water bottles because they fell out and broke. If LL Bean were to stitch an adjustable nylon strap just above the water bottle pocket to hold/support the top part of the water bottle, this would be the ultimate school backpack for kids.

Disappointed in Quality
I’ve been a longtime LL Bean customer and have always loved their backpacks. My son’s previous packs lasted 2 and 4 years respectively we only replaced them because he needed a larger size. Unfortunately, the quality seems to have slipped in recent years.
We bought a new backpack in-store this fall, but when we got home, I noticed a defect. I exchanged it, but the replacement only lasted about two months before one strap began fraying where it connects to the bag. My son hardly uses it as it stays in his locker except before and after school, so this is really disappointing.
To make matters worse, the store was out of stock, and they couldn’t place an order for me. I now have to order online and pay shipping unless I spend over $100, which feels unreasonable for an exchange of a defective product. It's great they have a one year return policy but not when I'm paying for shipping.
The shoulder straps are stiff, which makes the bag less comfortable. If it wasn't for the large capacity and laptop compartment, I would not choose this bag (or company). I’m hoping LL Bean can bring back the quality and comfort that made their backpacks a favorite in our house.

Good backpack but it has two flaws
Overall, this is a good backpack and.has useful storage compartments. It.makes a great commuter pack. It would easily rate 5 stars except for two areas of improvement. First, it only has one cup holder. Almost all packs have two. The one cup holder it does have is disappointing, especially in comparison to my last LL Bean pack. The stretch part which holds the cup in is very weak. Thus the cup sits in the holder losely. Also, the holder is not as deep as my previous pack. It is easy for the cup to fall out if the bag is tilted a little. The other issue seems to be a design flaw. LL Bean is good at putting light reflecting material on the back of the pack and on the front straps for safety. On this pack, the light reflectors on the straps were set too high, thus they rode on my shoulders pointing up, instead of facing forward to reflect car lights. If these two flaws were fixed, this would be a perfect pack.
