Buy two sizes too large, and long/tall
I love this sweater, but LL Bean has a continuing problem of not pre-shrinking their yarn. I bought the largest size they have, and after washing, it fits. Except the sleeves are shorter than the original over-the-hands look. A heavy cotton sweater cannot need to be treated like it's made out of silk. Or air-dried -- it would get moldy first.

Rollneck sweater
Thick, solid sweater. LL Bean’s typical quality. It fits well, i wish the blue color I bought was a little bit dark. This blue is more for warm weather but the thickness is good for colder one. Anyhow like every things about the sweater except for the color.

Nice weight
This sweater fits at the high/mid hip versus low hip on me. I wasn’t looking for a long sweater. it is mid weight, I took a small and I am 129 pounds, 5’ 3.5”. The sizing is right. The blue is a wonderful colour.

For “authentic” please lose the “slightly fitted”
This sweater will do for now but it lacks the boxy, straight fit of the traditional (and unisex) fit of a real rollneck. That said, the fabric (cotton) is much more comfortable than a wool one. The only really good colors are the white ones and navy ones. Medium is too large and sloppy but small is almost too small because it is annoyingly “slightly fitted”.
