Roomy inside but needs hip belt.
At a total of 45 inches it's very close to not being accepted by all airlines for underseat stowing. It's not clear where both ends of the shoulder strap attach; I never figured it out. Main problem is lack of hip belt, which would make this tiring to walk with. Returned.

Great pack !
I bought this in preparation for a 2 week trip to Italy with my wife. We would be changing cities about every 3 days and traveling by train and rental car so we need to be capable of moving luggage ourselves and be as mobile as possible. I also purchased another pack which was was 3 liters larger than this pack but after test packing both packs the LL Bean pack was what I selected because it’s Shape was more rectangular. The shoe bag provided with the pack easily held my size 14 hiking shoes and the number of pockets was good. I used compression packing cubes and this allowed me more space. If I would suggest and improvements to the bag it would be external compression straps

Rugged carry-on/back pack at a reasonable price
I purchased this pack for a month long vacation in Europe consisting of a cruise, as well as an additional 4-city itinerary, train travel and 3 flights. It served in an un-checked carry-on role, as a complement to my medium-sized wheeled duffle (from another company) which was checked for air travel. It is rugged, well-made, and easily withstood the rigors of my trip. As my trip took me to various climates this spring, and my amount of luggage was very limited, this pack was crammed and stuffed with close to 30 pounds of gear and clothing. As it was un-checked, it did not get baggage-handler abused. However, it held up perfectly. I carried it in back-pack mode as well as by trolley, side-and top-handle; all were suitable and comfortable. The only thing I have any concerns about over the long term, is the plastic D-rings and latches on the pack and carry straps. They performed fine, however, I would urge LL Bean to switch to brass or stainless D-Rings and buckles for long term durability. Otherwise, a very sturdy and thoughtfully designed pack with lots of great features for mixed travel.

Good size and comfortable to carry as back pack. 2nd trip had to check bag due to full flight and some of the stitching loosened. Will see how long it lasts.

So far (because I have not used it for travel yet...) this bag is beautifully made. Seems to be a very smart design and lightweight. Hopefully, it will be much better than the old backpack I have been using.
