Rated 1 out of 5 by Vocabmom from Very Disappointing This is my third pair of these shorts I've had - the other 2 are getting worn out from riding so much. I love them! The best shorts I've ever had. This pair is a redesign. I can't recommend these new ones. There are2 Velcro straps on the side instead of belt loops. You can't tighten them up enough and the shell keeps slipping down. The zippers are not easy to use one-handed like the previous ones were. The leg pocket is now on the left side and more along the side of the leg, rather than one the right and towards the front. Along with the zipper, the side and rear pocket take 2 hands to open them - not very biker-friendly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by outdoorlover from velcro closures to adjust the waist are bad design My husband has a pair of the "old" llbean men's biking shorts and loves them. He needed a second pair for a long biking trip, so we purchased the revised shorts (not realizing the design changes would have a significant impact on fit). The velcro closures to adjust the waist fit are insufficient. There are no belt loops on these shorts so you can't use a belt. They also run big. On the positive side, having the removable insert has advantages (can wear the shorts without the insert) and the pockets are sufficient. We appreciate that there are biking shorts available that look more like shorts as opposed to the spandex shorts. I am returning the "revised" biking shorts.

Rated 3 out of 5 by JeffB from Good, but not as good as original version. I was really looking forward to my new riding shorts, and overall they are comfortable while cycling. However I find two flaws that I don’t like. First, the new shorts are really two separate shorts (inner and outer) that connect loosely near the waistband. This is an awkward way to connect the shorts and I find they move around too much. The outer shorts tend to move lower (aka plumber butt style). Second, the new pad on the inner shorts is so big and thick that it’s quite uncomfortable to walk in them. Like walking with a loaded diaper :(

Rated 5 out of 5 by DocCG from Good Design I bought 2 pairs, one for myself, one for my wife. The inner elastic, form-fitting brief has padding in the crotch to relieve presurre points on long rides. The outer short looks like a good quality walking short. The 2 are tied together on the inside by straps on either hip. The brief is elastic, so it is comfortable, and the padding really does provide relief, even on a narrow road bike seat. The outer short has side velcro straps and elastic sections for waist adjustment, as well as good zip pockets. Belt loops might be handy for clip on devices; but both of our shorts seemed to stay up and in place without the use of a belt. All in all, these are a nice looking short with features designed well for comfort while you ride.

Rated 4 out of 5 by RogerM from Awkward The shorts fit me very well, but getting into them is a bit of a challenge. The shorts comprise of two shorts in one. An inner short, with nice padded seat, which is then attached to the outer shell via two buttons. Getting into them requires, in my opinion, undue time and effort, to be sure you get into it correctly. Once on they look and work fine. My old LL Bean bike shorts had the inner padded short fully attached to the shell, thus getting in was a cinch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by okhammer from A real tushy saver I rode my bike for years without cycle shorts, and after buying these I realize what an imbecile I was. These fit comfortably, the liner fits properly so it does not slide around. The outer shell is well designed with pockets in the right places to hold your phone and wallet without getting in the way of your cycling motion. My wife runs them through washing machine and dryer with out a problem. These are great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by sdonham from Best bike shorts, if you size correctly I'm an avid rider, putting on about 100 miles per week on my bike. I've gone through many brands of cycling shorts and I came back to LLBean because they have been the only ones that lasted. My last pair of LLBean cycling shorts (item# 286042) are still in use and they're 5 years old. They are also affordable where other brands are $150-$200 and don't last. Other reviewers complained about sizing being too big. I decided to take a risk, bought a size smaller than recommended and they fit perfectly. I'm a 30-32 waist (30 inseam, if that matters) and the size "small" (rated at 28-30" waist) was snug with the inner liner, but not tight. External shorts where a perfect fit. If you have huge quads, these may be tight on you. However the fabric is easily elastic, stretches and has a "slit" in the side to aid in movement. These have not chaffed, even after 80 miles in the saddle. The inner liner connects to the shorts using a small "snap" on either side (see photo). At first, I thought this was useless, but after using the shorts and a liner without the snaps, I realize they are CRITICALLY important as they keep the inner liner from twisting and the pad from shifting from one side of your buttocks to the other. I've washed mine at least 30 times and there is no visible wear. They magically come out of the machine feeling almost dry and are ready to use after an hour if hung on a drying rack. The pockets are awesome and I'm here to buy more shorts before they go away as they are now my new favorite bike shorts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by PRSJ from Comfort Biking Shorts The shorts are great and I was able to get them on sale. The design - two separate shorts, a padded inner pair held to the outer shorts by two straps - makes it a bit awkward to put them on - but once on, they're comfortable. I like the four secured pockets.
