There’s nothing quite like time spent outside. The benefits of setting aside the busyness of daily life and connecting with nature are endless — from physical health to mental well-being.

In this series, Shawn Gorman, Executive Chairman and great-grandson of L.L. Bean, interviews friends and fellow outdoor enthusiasts, discussing everything from favorite fishing holes to how time outside can make us all healthier and happier.

In this edition, Gorman talks to style writer Emilie Hawtin, who recently spent time exploring Maine with an L.L.Bean guide.

Shawn: What do you seek from time in the outdoors?

Emilie: I’m the happiest when I’m outside, city or woods, anywhere I am. I like to go where I feel in sync with the movements of nature and something more primitive: on the water, under very tall trees and in the mountains. Nature teaches me how to be a better person.

Shawn: What is your favorite solo outdoor activity?

Emilie:I really love putting one foot in front of the other: long distance walking, hiking or running. I do this every day, wherever I am, in any weather! It’s how I meditate or explore a new place. And I love to head out early and surf alone when it’s warm, but I’ve yet to endure winter waters.

Shawn: Where are you most looking forward to post-pandemic?

Emilie:I’m excited to cook outside with friends and see them smile. And to jump in the car with whoever wants to join and go on an adventure.

Shawn: What are you most hopeful for in 2021?

Emilie:A focus on the human side of life and a more sustainable way of being. I think more people are appreciating the process of things, whether it’s a shirt, a loaf of bread or the way they spend their time, and that, to me, is really beautiful.

Shawn: What is your wish for people in 2021?

Emilie:I hope for people to be more empathetic with themselves and others, and to care for the natural world. With everyone slowing down, I think there’s more clarity about why that matters.
