This exclusive flannel shirt is woven just for us by true artisans in Portugal. These expert craftspeople meticulously brush our Scotch Plaid fabric eight times on each side to create a long-lasting material with that distinctive smooth and cozy feel. But that doesn't automatically make it plush enough. It still needs to pass the "touch test." Only a master weaver can declare it soft enough.

Soft and Substantial Blackwatch Flannel Shirt
I’ve been trying for a very long time to find a shirt as soft and substantial as the L.L.Beans shirts I bought a decade ago (which are still holding up well) and the men’s flannel shirts from Bean and its competitors. This flannel in the blackwatch pattern is IT! I usually wear an XL in Bean shirts, but the XL I tried would have been snug if it shrunk; since the flannel is 100% cotton, I decided to exchange for an XXL and it’s just right with room for a little shrinkage. Excellent shirt!

A standout among flannel shirts!
I have several flannel shirts from another company that seem confining and uncomfortable. This LL Bean flannel shirt is the most comfortable flannel I have ever owned. It is soft and relaxed enough to still be flattering and feminine, but not so big that it seems baggy.

sleeves too short, flannel pills
What a disappointment. I got this shirt in two patterns because it seemed to fit very nicely and was flattering. I especially liked the fit at the shoulders. But after wearing a few times I noticed that the sleeves are very short. After washing, they were even shorter. And the material looked like it had been washed 20 times instead of once--rather than getting nicer, it pilled. Mostly, I'm annoyed at the short sleeves.

Poor shirt design
I really wanted to like this shirt. The flannel colors and feel are great. But that's about all I can say that's positive. LLBean cheaped out on the number of buttons! Seems petty - BUT, by only having 7 in front instead of 9 like they used to feature on their flannel shirts, it gapes open right across the bust if you move your arms...definitely not a good look. I have to fix it by adding five button holes to the front and find matching buttons - or replace all the button in the front and on the cuffs. Speaking of the cuffs, the shirt no longer has 2 buttons on the cuffs, which gave you the ability to make it more snug on your wrist if you have slim wrists. I had to remove and sew the cuff buttons back on in a different position. Also, the shirt is not relaxed - there's less fabric around the hips, so it's too snug. Last but not least, the "side pockets" are useless and the obvious stitching for them makes the shirt look silly. I think LLBean decided to economize by (1) using less fabric around the hips so they could include the useless pockets, and (2) reducing the # of buttons. Poor design choices! I'm keeping it but not ordering any more. At the very least - from now on I'll count buttons in online or catalog pictures of any LLBean shirt and pass on buying any that have only 7 down the front. I would not recommend this shirt to anyone.

LL Bean products are well designed, well made and well worth their cost. Everything I purchased lived up to -- and beyond my expectations. Fabrics and construction are far better than almost any others on the market... Colors are wonderful..... Probably the best clothing site on the internet.
