Product Details

The Maine Hunting Shoe was "L.L." Bean's first product, introduced in 1912. Over the years, we've made lots of improvements, but hunters told us they missed the moccasin-like feel that our original boots had in the woods. So we brought it back.

  • Approx. weight:: 3 lb. 13 oz. per pair.
  • With light or midweight socks: Whole sizes, order one size down. Half sizes, order 1½ size down. Example: 9 or 9½, order a size 8. With heavyweight socks: Whole sizes, order your normal size. Half sizes, order one size down. Example: 9 or 9½, order a size 9.

With a moccasin-like sole that lets you feel the forest floor beneath your feet, a taller 12" height for extra coverage and a waterproof upper, we carefully considered every detail of these Maine-made boots. As one customer told us, "These boots fit like they have over a 100 years of effort put into the design."

  • Premium waterproof leather upper.
  • Steel shank for superior lateral and arch support.
  • New sole provides improved traction and durability.
  • Laces not waterproof.
  • Handstitched and checked for quality.
  • Leather molds to your leg for a custom fit.
  • Not designed to stay submerged in water.
  • Moccasin-like, flexible sole allows you to feel the forest floor.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Initial Review Out Of The Box Size-wise: I wear about a 10/Wide, normally. I'm going to wear these to the bee yard all summer long and expect to wear ordinary socks, so I sized down to a 9, as suggested. Although I have a wide foot, the flexible portion of this boot allows for my width just fine. I just don't see any problems width-wise going forward. The height isn't what I'd expected. I have a broken right tibia that, due to the method of healing, has left me with a chunk of bone that noticably sticks out. I ordered the 12" because when I measured from the sole up, the top of the 10" boot looked as though it was going to rest smack dab on the jutting bone. Turns out, the top of the 12" boot rests... you guessed it. So I was a little surprised there, but I'm willing to work around it. The leather appears to be full grain. I can't say this with any certainty, but I know the leather's a little stiff (a good thing) and it looks like it's going to take a little breaking in (also a good thing if you're playing the long game; I am). Finally, the laces. They're comically short. I have bird legs and the laces are STILL short. No, I mean they're REALLY short. Looks like I'm going to be lacing my L.L. Bean classic boots with Wal-Mart laces. Of course I'm going to tell EVERYBODY this. All in all though, my first impression is that I got lucky, size-wise, and otherwise I think I just bought a seriously nice pair of boots (minus the freakishly short laces).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great boots and very comfortable! I bought the Maine hunting boots with the 12” uppers about 2 years ago. They have been very durable and keep them wiped down periodically with a good leather conditioner to keep them soft and pliable. A very good investment for the price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great hunting boot if used properly I do a fair amount of hunting, mostly birds in Texas and South Dakota and these boots have been great. Super light and comfortable but need to be realistic about your sock choices. Being rubber bottom, I suggest a PU sock liner and then a merino wool sock. This will keep you warm and dry moving sweat away from your skin when hiking or sitting in a blind. To keep them the most water resistant I can, I use a beeswax leather treatment and heavy around the triple stitching. Don't let this scare you off in the least! I do this with all my hunting boots, but afraid many reviewers aren't sure how to do these things or expect way too much from an unlined boot lol. The only knock is give is they don't have much ankle support so pretty easy to twist an ankle if you step in a hole while looking for pheasant

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Falling apart before the season is over I have used these boots for upland hunting around the fields and woods of Pennsylvania and they have not lasted the season. The upper leather and lower rubber have separated after only 2 months of use. They would be good for walking through puddles in a park, but they have not withstood upland hunting at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for what they are designed to do The 12" Bean boot was designed for, and is the perfect boot for hunting/canoe camping in the N. woods. Flexible enough to kneel in a canoe, waterproof for wet landings, a silent stalker in the woods, and a slipper in the camp site. Buy them large and double up the wool socks and it is plenty warm in the snow. Stay in the woods, more fun, don't grind them down on pavement.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 12" maine hunting shoe Why do you not make the 12" maine hunting in a size 12 wide anymore?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this boot. I have the 14 inch Maine hunting shoe that Bean doesn’t make anymore. I bought them back in the 1980’s, and I still wear them to this day. They’re a excellent all around boot. From upland game hunting, to deer hunting, to fishing, hiking, camping, and just sitting by the campfire with family and friends. Very durable, lightweight, and comfortable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spot on assistance for great fit. I recently purchased my first pair of Maine Hunting shoes. Not really sure about the proper size I called and spoke to a very kind gentleman who guided me through what size I should get. I advised my regular walking shoe size was 13. On his suggestion even with the thicker socks I would be wearing he advised 12. Upon arrival, the Men's size 12 was exactly spot on and even had the proper spacing in the toe area. I would also like to thank Crystal who made my boots- fantastic workmanship!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My only Boot !! When I was 17 my dad said, try these ... my first pair. They went thru mud, slop, snow, swamps, and even the Everglades. And lots of trips to the BWCA (Boundary Waters Canoe Area) in Minnesota. Today, I still have them ... and two additional pairs. I have lacing hooks on all three (minor extra cost, but worth it to me). In a few days I turn 74... Like I say, "My only boot". Enjoy !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big Foot Well built boot, unfortunately, could not fit foot inside due to wide ankle/ instep. Have a 40 year old pair of 10 inch boots that I still wear. Had to cut the sides of the tongue to the 4th eyelet to fit foot inside. My anatomical problem, not the boots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great boots! It was like Christmas when they came I just received my Maine Hunting Boots, and I absolutely love them. Even though it is a cold and rainy day on the CT shore, I just had to try out my new boots. They kept my feet nice and warm as I walked around the property, jumping into puddles, and even planning out where to clear a path this spring for a new walkway down to the pond, Great boots, I can't to use them for the next 20 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All Around Boot. I’ve been wearing the LL Bean Maine Hunting Shoe/Bean Boot for 40 yrs. now. My first pair I bought in 1982. It was the Maine Hunting Shoe with a felt liner in it that I used for deer hunting and ice fishing. Still wearing them to this day. I also have the 14” Maine Hunting Shoe for upland hunting. Two pairs of 12”boots 1 leather uppers and 1 waxed canvas. These are my fishing boots. Last but not least the Bean Boot Moc. These are everyday wear in winter, spring, and fall. Each boot extremely comfortable and waterproof. I keep them waterproofed with Sno Seal. For outdoor activity you can’t buy a better boot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best boots ever These are my second pair of Maine Hunting Shoes. My first pair lasted over 25 years of regular use. I hunt elk and deer in the Pacific NW. Oil them regularly. I also use them for regular trips to the river with my dog. They are the best boots on the market. You feel the ground under your feet with these shoes, and the soles don’t clog with mud. They are extremely water proof and provide excellent ankle support. Traction is great on all terrain mediums. If you want a little more cushion for your feet buy a pair of insole’s. The best boots ever

Rated 4 out of 5 by from LL Bean Maine Hunting Boot 12 inch high model I ranked 4 stars only because this model has always needed a more substantial foot bed. I've had a couple pairs. When coated with Sno-Seal, they are totally waterproof up to the very tops as the tongue of this model has interior leather that folds between the tongue and the shins preventing water entry as high as the boot tops. LOVE that feature. Most hunting boots have a gap in that area. I bought these to wade in shallow creeks. I "WOULD" still be using my older ones, but a medical condition made my feet too large for size 9. My New boots are size 11 and are easier to put on and take off. I'm installing a Super Feet insole to make them perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Boot Bromance I sent these to a first-time Maine resident who didn’t have any weather gear. He tried them on and LOVED them immediately! I could have found cheaper boots elsewhere, but I love that these are made in Maine and will last forever. They also look really cool on, lol

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replacing 30 year old Boots I got my first pair 30 years ago, and had them resoled once 10-15 years ago. Due to the resole limit of once, it’s time to get another pair. I still have a few miles on my originals, but since they’ve recently become more of a daily “go to” boot, I had to get my back up pair ready to go. It takes a few minutes to break in and train the leather uppers, but they’ll be your old friends soon enough. You won’t regret getting these fine boots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 12 inch Maine Hunting Shoe Exceptional craftsmanship in my favorite style of winter boot. And as comfortable as any footwear I`ve ever worn. This boot is almost as quiet as a pair of deerskin moccasins when slipping through the woods.
