Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great travel pack Bought this backpack mainly for travel as the daypack I’d been using for years wasn’t really big enough to carry all the chargers, devices, books, etc. needed for long cross country trips. Have to say this thing is bottomless: it seems to hold everything and then some, including the fall jacket I didn’t need in California and the dress shoes I bought en route to a reception. The only drawback was that it almost became too heavy for me to carry! Fortunately the straps are well padded with some insulation inside the pack. It fit well under the seat on the plane so I didn’t need to stow it in the crowded overhead compartment. Highly recommend, but since it’s so easy to stuff so many things in it, be sure to check the weight before you head for the airport.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great travel backpack with loads of room I just got back from a 20 day vacation to Italy. Iberia Aurlines lost my suitcase on the way in so the only items I had for my trip were the ones I had put in this backpack. I lived out of this pack for 20 days while in Italy and it worked great. It was large enough to hold 5 t-shirts, 2 pairs of pants, 2 dress shirts, 1 pair of shorts, 2 pairs of shoes, 1 dopp kit, 6 pair of socks, misc. electronics, and i Rick Steves: Italy travel book. Straps are highly adjustable and comfortable for long periods of time. The materials seem very sturdy and of high quality. I dragged this pack through train stations, airports, and bus stops all over Italy and it held up very well. I bought this pack exclusively for my European trip but now it will be my go to bag whenever I travel. I love this pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth Every Penny, Kids still like them! Finally a backpack for my middle school kid that doesn't rip within the first week. Most years we end up buying 2 cheap backpacks. Even tried "heavy duty" hiking back packs. Nothing survives the weight of what the kids carry. So far it's going strong! He is much more comfortable carrying his books with this backpack because of the padding. I wish I had just got him an LL Bean bag years ago. Mine lasted me through college and I'll be happy if this one get him thru the year!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So many pockets The extra volume is at the top but it’s still roomy. The thing I like the most is all the pockets. It makes it so much easier to organize all the things that my son needs for the school day as a highschooler.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Carry On capacity in a Personal Item size Great pack. I especially like the dedicated computer pocket as too often I find myself in the TSA line in an airport fishing around for my computer. This easy access slip pocket makes it so simple to pull out the computer in a second without any rummaging. I also like that it doesnt have too many pockets. Too many packs have so many pockets I can never find what Im looking for. This pack is practical and sturdy with a decent hip belt and chest strap to take weight off the shoulders. Lastly I like the square shape. Many packs are rounded at the top and, therefore, hold alot less.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST school backpack! LOTS of storage. SOLID top handle that is securely attached to the bag for easy locker hanging. It also keeps materials well balanced for better back health even with a full load of school supplies. Secure laptop pocket too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Functional and Stylish I've been looking for a new backpack for months. The Comfort Cary 42L checks all the boxes. I can quickly access my laptop, headphones, and a book. And I can also pack enough clothes for a weekend trip with room to spare. The backpack is comfortable, functional, and stylish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great improvement to old Comfort Carry Ignore the mixed reviews, this backpack has some major improvements to the old Comfort Carry backpack and is plenty big. It easily fits a 17" laptop and my biggest college textbooks. I didn't need to replace my old Comfort Carry, but the zippers were starting to unzip when the thing was very full, so I upgraded to the new one. I'm very happy with my new backpack. Key new features are the grab handles on the top and size (very much needed because 42L backpacks can get very heavy) and all the new pockets for organization. This backpack seems more structured than previous LL Bean 42L backpacks. It seems to be designed to keep more of the items up higher, rather than everything pooling at the bottom. The result is that even though it's a gigantic pack and you can't escape it looking huge because it's 42L, it doesn't give as much of the appearance that you are a thru hiker rather than a college student. I go to grad school and work full time, I carry 2 laptops (including a 17" gaming laptop), 2 iPads, and at least 3 textbooks all the time, plus lunch, snacks, chargers, etc and this pack is up to the job of holding everything. Only issue I have is the water bottle holders are huge and my little 16 oz water bottle seems loose, but if you have one of those giant Stanley water bottles, you can fit it no problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 42ltr olive backpack So far so good. I carry about 27# of school supplies with me everyday and I think it will hold up. The computer pocket is well protected and I use the side handle more than I thought. I wish the color options would have been different.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Strap ripped within less than a month of use Purchased this backpack for my 14 year old daughter for school. She doesn’t even have any textbooks, just a laptop and school supplies to carry. Yet the strap is already ripping off. This does not meet the high quality standards that L.L. Bean used to be known for. My high school L.L. Bean backpack from 1997 hasn’t broken. What happened? To make it worse, we had ironed AND sewed a bunch of band patches onto it to decorate it. So now if we receive a replacement, we cannot simply go through all of that work again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the Wait For more than a year, I've been looking for a new backpack that precisely meets my travel needs. The Comfort Carry, 42L does exactly what I need a backpack to do. I have quick access to my laptop, headphones, charging cables, sunglasses, book, rain jacket, and enough space to easily pack for a long weekend or 3-day trip. The bag is comfortable and functional. I'm 100% happy with my purchase.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A bit let down I am disappointed with the side pouch compartment. Less than 2 weeks of school and there is already two holes where the drink bottle was being carried.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy student, happy Mom. This backpack is excellent for a middle or high school student. It has enough space for books, folders, computer, lunch and extras (water bottle, gym shorts), but is not so big that it feels like a suit case. For a very style-conscious middle schooler and a practical mother, we found the perfect combination. Thanks!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Big disappointment I bought this to replace my nearly perfect L.L. Bean Quad Pack, which died a premature death due to poor quality fabric. Unfortunately, the Quad is no longer available. Supposedly the Comfort Carry is meant as a replacement but it is far, far worse than the Quad in every aspect. While this pack has a compartment for a laptop, it offers poor protection because it does not have any suspension or false bottom, meaning that a laptop will hit the ground hard unless the pack is put down gently. I would not consider this a laptop pack. Like many people looking for a laptop pack, I was looking for something for everyday commuting to work. For that purpose, I need a bag that has some degree of organization for supplies like pens, cables, and other small items. This pack has several large, deep pockets but nothing that would be useful for small items. It also lacks any lined compartments that would offer protection for something like sunglasses or a phone. It is also not particularly comfortable (again, the bag is misnamed) because it doesn't permit airflow to your back. However, it is not a terrible pack. It does hold quite a lot. It might not be bad for travel, though it lacks some of the features (e.g., compression straps and internal organization that better travel packs offer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than before! After reading all the reviews about buying one of these after buying last year‘s version for my older son, I actually like the looks and functionality of this one better than last year. And, all of the talk about losing space doesn’t seem to apply as we’re having no issues loading this backpack up with binders, etc.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great backpack with lots of storage My son really likes this backpack for school because it hats lots of storage space and pockets for his stuff including a laptop

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it I LOVE this backpack!! It fits so many items and distributes weight well. I also love the color, and that it is so waterproof- has saved me multiple times from the rain. The only thing I would say is that I wish the zipper for the smartphone pocket wasn't so close to the other zippers- sometimes they get tangled in each other or confused- I think they could have combined the back two pockets to have a wider back pocket. Have only had this for a month or so, and I had my last LL Bean backpack for 10+ years, so I can't attest to this one's longevity yet, but I hope it lasts!
