Our premium upland hunting coat features the exceptional durability of waxed-cotton with classic styling. It's highly water resistant and will gain an attractive patina as it ages.
There's nothing like the classic ruggedness of waxed cotton. The only drawback is the time-consuming process of cleaning by hand after you've had it in the field a few times. We worked with the originator of waxed cotton, British Millerain, to develop this innovative fabric that eliminates all cleaning fuss. Just throw it in the wash like any other piece of clothing. It'll come out looking just as good and with all of its durability and water resistance 100% intact.

Sensational Coat
This is a really impressive coat. It's tailoring is an excellent quality, zippers of quality as well. Lots of pockets and a great fit. I am 6'4", 250lbs and the XXLT fits well. Still room to layer with a sweater or even vest. One review I read indicated things such as dog hair and dust stick to its wax surface. Not true. It is a good finish - and this finish works as a very effective wind breaker on windy days I wore it today - minus 10 celsius without layering and it was just fine. If you are looking for a unique coat that has every appearance of wearing well, then this is it. Highly recommend.

XL tall a bit wide in the middle
Not sure what or why someone would call this jacket slimy, it isn't slimy at all, I really appreciate the style, length I chose the XL tall (I'm 6'4 225) I find the mid is a bit wide but I plan to wear a medium to thick sweater underneath so I guess it'll accommodate the width. The season is changing soon so I'll get a better chance to wear this more often, quite impressed with the quality and the size of the pockets, the collar is soft on my neck, the extra folds on the back of the shoulders give my arms the extra room to reach and not have the sleeves ride up. Good job LL Bean.

The wax is nasty.
It was slimy and gross. No doubt would ruin my cars upholstery. Returned it. If you handle the jacket and set it down you can feel the slime still on your hands. It’s odd. These companys are like sheep. Why can’t you all offer one without gunk all over it? Anyway, instead of refunding they sent me a gift card for some reason so I had to call and get that fixed too.

Great coat
I bought this coat as a more affordable option to a Barbour. I have owned the previous LL Bean version of this coat and when that one started to wear out after several years, I bought this new one. I’ve had it now for almost 2 years and love it. The fit is comfortable and looks good. It has a comfortable, boxy fit while still looking clean and slim. I would say it fits true to size. The jacket provides a decent level of warmth on its own and fits well when layering with a sweater. After almost two years it continues to look great. It’s not cheap but it’s held up and still looks great. I will likely buy another when the time comes..

My go-anywhere do-anything coat
I bought this coat as a Christmas present for myself and have been wearing it regularly since. I wanted something well-made, durable, requiring little maintenance, water resistant but breathable, stylish, and not so expensive that I would be hesitant to wear it. I looked extensively at some well known producers of waxed cotton jackets, but found the quality, utility, and value of this LL Bean jacket to be perfect for me. I’ve worn it to work, out to dinner, in the rain, and in the wind and snow (with a few layers).
The pockets are massive and easily accessible, an absolute necessity when you are in the field, or in town with your two kids who always seem to have an endless supply of things for you to hold. The color is a rich and warm brown, getting a lovely touch of patina already. The zipper is a joy to use and is very robust. I have no difficulty whatsoever with the cotton lining, and prefer it vastly over synthetic fabric, despite a little extra care in slipping my arms through the sleeves.
My only suggestions for improvement would be: 1. A removable hood. 2. A lining on the inside of the cuff snaps, which would be a little more comfortable. Otherwise, I have no complaints and am looking forward to many years with this coat!

I really like this coat, great every day and for upland hunting. The only issue is that the wax is sticky to touch and picks up lent, dust, dog hair and seed heads. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent the sticky wax but keep its look?

Do yourself a favor, get this coat!
Bought this to replace my favorite jacket.
I am very glad I chose to try this coat - first, it is extra good because of the wax coating - the coating better blocks wind, and rain. Second, it is not too big or too small. I can wear it as is, or layer up with a sweater or a vest, and be ready for colder weather.
My brother-in-law bought one, based on my description, and he is equally pleased.
This is now my Favorite Jacket.

Waxed Upland Coat is a Great Barn Coat
Researched Barn Coats and found L.L.Bean's Waxed Upland Coat. The reviews were good except some found problems with the waxed finish and placing their arms into the coat when putting it on. The coat was found to be pricy; however, L.L.Bean did offer discounts over the holidays which I took advantage of. This placed the Waxed Upland Coat very close to the competition but with some very good features. I ordered; received; and have worn the coat for a month. The concerns about waxy finish are overblown. Yes it has a waxy finish but nothing I am concerned about. It hangs in the hall closet with other coats and does not rub off on the other coats but is a great finish for damp; wet days. This concern should only be for those who are extreme about it. The other concern was putting the jacket on and yes you need to hold your heavy wool shirt cuff when pushing your arm through but I have to do that with almost all my jackets. I give this coat a 5 Star rating because it is what it says it is. I wear it with a sleeveless vest and have been out in wet cold days; temperate days and 40 degree nice days with different accessories. Some days with just the coat; some with my wool shirt and sleeveless vest, and so, I am getting lots of casual wear with this coat for both walking and driving. The fit is perfect in Regular for a 5'11" male who is 160 lbs. The arms have ample room to move and I could swing a shotgun easily if I had to. I wear this coat in North East Westchester County which is clearly a suburban area but I am frequently down in the cities of Westchester and New York City. Fits in in every area including up in the Catskills. Great coat.

Good coat for woods and brush.
Good coat for cold and wet weather in brush and woods. Plenty of pockets with vest storage pocket for game, maps, coffee mug, food, you name it. I had to buy a bigger than normal size basically to get better access to arms. I usually wear a large size but returned first coat for an XL size which was better .Wish it had a little more lining which would make it perfect. But wearing a vest and flannel shirt makes it warm for freezing weather. I have not worn it in a heavy rain storm but was dry with light rain and sleet.

Great for the Briars
Great hunting coat. I hunt in Kentucky where we have a lot of briars. This coat goes thru them very good and is really durable. Warm coat. Only things I would change would be to add fleece in the pockets and a bigger game bag. Overall though I give this coat an A.

Waxed Upland Coat
This is a very well made waxed cotton coat comparable to the well-known British version. The fit is true to size and the large does have room for a sweater or vest underneath. My 4 star rating is based only on the fact that it doesn't come with a hood, either built-on or with the ability to add it later.

Not sure of others examples but mine was a solid miss. The collar was not waxed, yet very sticky/tacky to the touch. Fabric quality seemed well below what I’ve grown to expect from Bean during my 40+ years of buying and wearing their clothes and using their gear. Flimsy fabric, wax was irregularly applied and coat felt cheap overall.

Nice outdoor activity jacket.

Best Wax Cotton Jacket
An excellent waxed cotton jacket for an amazing price. Thoughtful details with a fit and finish found on jackets that cost double. Just the right weight, room enough for a sweater underneath. While it has many features one would find in a more famous brand it truly stands above every other waxed cotton jacket on the market today- there are TALL sizes available. I cannot overstate how wonderful and important this is when purchasing a jacket of this style. Every other one that I have tried either the chest fits and the cuffs are half-way up my forearms or the sleeves fit and I look like a ten year old in my fathers jacket. If you love this style but never found one that properly fit you, try this one and then order one in every color!
