This portable, easy-to-set-up beach umbrella is designed to resist winds that topple other umbrellas. It also provides UPF 50+ sun protection.
Wind and beach umbrellas can be a tough combination. This unique umbrella is designed to withstand gusty winds without falling over or turning inside out. This is achieved with an innovative, patented venting system in the canopy that lets wind pass through rather than lifting the entire umbrella up.

Best Beach Umbrella
We have used this umbrella now for 2 straight beach seasons. It works great and easily sets up. Make sure you read the instructions of how to properly set up your umbrella, so it has the proper orientation to wind direction.

Broke Immediately
On its maiden voyage, i opened this umbrella (received as a gift). There was a very mild breeze at the beach. Within 5 minutes, the fragile ribs (struts?) snapped into two pieces rendering this expensive umbrella useless.

Beach umbrella on the Jersey shore
The LL Bean Wind Challenger beach umbrella was easy to assemble and secure into the sand. If the wind happened to loosen the umbrella, it was easy to re-anchor it deeper into the sand. However, the mesh part of the packing sleeve made it a little difficult to put away, compared to other brands of umbrellas.

The Outerbanks Winds Won
It's a lovely umbrella but could not stand the winds of the Outerbanks, NC. It turned inside out and went flying down the beach. I'm sure it would be fine anywhere else.

Great umbrella
Not sure what people are doing wrong to have issues with this umbrella. I’ve had this same one for over 5 years now and it has never once blow away or reversed inside out from the very strong wind on the gulf coast of Florida. Easy to set up. No problem twisting the pole into the ground. The bag is the only thing that has worn out at all in 5 years and that’s still useable

Outstanding quality and LLBean is just so great!
We were just at Revere Beach in Boston and borrowed, no strings attached this brand new umbrella and beach chair. LLBean has a partnership I guess with the beach superb and it made such a positive impression o our road trip from Canada. This beach is accessible on the blue TLine which is free right now and we saw a lot of people who obviously don’t live in the pricey condos enjoying the beach and free LLBean merch to borrow. We have shopped previous years at LLBean when the Cdn $ was at par. Now we for sure will be back at LLBean which seems to be a socially conscious retailer!

Looking for shade in the high desert
Great shade and it allows cool breezes to pass through but the button to change the umbrella direction is almost impossible to depress. Not sure I can use it alone and without help.

Disappointed
We were hoping to use it a lot this summer but it's now sitting in the garage at our beach house. The large digging mechanism does nothing and frankly, it would be easier to just have a pointy end and dig a hole with a shovel. Once we finally got it assembled and in place the wind took it over. I ended up propping my beach chair up against it to hold it in place. Not worth the money.

Blew off easily
We were so excited to try this because of the ventilation system. Unfortunately the handle that’s suppose to lock it did nothing and the umbrella blew off as a result of the lake breeze. We will be returning this.

Just used for first time today was easy to set up but after enjoying for the first couple was very disappointed when the wind kicked up a little and the umbrella came apart and hit me right in the face thank god I had on sun glasses to prevent serious injury also I was subjected to a lot of laughing.after retrieving umbrella with the help of strangers I analyzed what happened and discovered that the locking device between the 2 poles failed and will continue to do so without modification of some sort when the lock is in the lock position the pole comes apart with no effort at all no sure how to prevent this

Very Happy I Bought This One
Just tested on Cape Cod last weekend and it gracefully withstood a steady wind that turned other beach umbrellas inside-out. Also easy to screw into the sand. A little pricey, but if you can save up, it's worth it.

Reversed in wind far less than what it should have been able to withstand..I'm having to repair in and restitch seams..also would help to have upper pole clamp down lower rather than a fixed height.

new design is an improvement
Redesign of the upper pole with a better connection between the pole and the "knuckle" that allows umbrella to tilt, corrected the problem that caused our first Wind Challenger to fail. LLBean replaced it and the new version is grezt!

Strong, light & sturdy, but the sun shines through
It's a great umbrella (style, color, weight, ease of assembly, sturdiness in the wind) other than for the fact that its wind-proofing holes allow the overhead sun though in places, so it requires some towel/chair repositioning. Its carrier bag also tore through its bottom seam after just two uses, and LLBean doesn't offer bag replacements.

This was my second purchase of this type of beach umbrella. Main reason is the umbrella design makes this a sturdy umbrella that stands up to high winds. Also easy to put into the sand with a handle attached.

Clamp Not Strong Enough and...
The umbrella didn't stand up to breezy conditions because the clamp is weak and did not hold the umbrella in place. I also thought we had a defective piece because we assumed the umbrella should also be held in place by the pin (and clamp). Turns out the pin is used to help screw the post/auger in place? Anyway, poor design and poor performance. Bummer!

Not up to the challenge!
So disappointed in this umbrella. The frame turned inside out during wind gusts. One of the mesh pieces ripped. It did provide some great shade, but did not live up to its name.

Be careful not to get beach umbrella wet
Bought a couple of these a while back. The pole literally rusted and decomposed and was returned to LL Bean but it was unfortunately after the 1 year warranty period. It was so bad that I figured it was worth them seeing and possibly making an exception. The reason they declined my return ( other than it being past the 1 year warranty period) was because the umbrella was in their opinion exposed to water / rain. Am I the only one that thinks a beach umbrella should be able to withstand rain or even water while being used a the beach?

Not worth the money
We purchased this umbrella as it was supposed to be good in the wind. We used it three times and on the third time it flipped inside out, twice, and bent. Ours was the only one on the beach that this happened too.
